How to remove a rear door panel on my 1991 Lincoln TownCar?
My 91 Lincoln rear window wont go up. I hear the motor running, but no window comes up. I think it fell off the track. But I cant for the life of me figure out how to take off the door panel. Can any one help me out by giving detailed instructions? Thanks..
If you can’t get the door panel off, I doubt that you will be able to repair the broken power window motor. I used to fix these for a living and they aren’t much fun to work on either. The sheet metal inside the door (once the door panel is off that is) will cut your hands all up. You can buy a new motor for about $150.00 on the net, and if you are lucky someone else has already replaced it and will save you drilling out the rivets that hold the motor in place. Bolts and nuts are used to reinstall it. So, this is after you remove the door panel, lift the window up for access and unbolt (or drill out the rivets) the old motor from the door. You have to lift the window up when you reinstall the new motor, it isn’t off it’s track like you thought. What breaks is the gear drive has shock absorbing biscuits that fail after you jam the window up a few thousand times, then the drive can only slip and not lift the window any longer. Actually, if you are still with me, there used to be a rebuild kit for these with new biscuits and a new drive gear, believe it or not!
I started with the above first, because in all seriousness, the door panel is the easy part of the job. To remove it, first you look very carefully, in the arm rest, at the bottom of the door and at the top of the door, you will find 8 to 10 fairly small sheet metal screws. Take these out, noting which went where for later reinstallation. Then, take a sturdy screwdriver (they make a special tool for this, and yes of course I have one) but this will work, you slide the screwdriver between the door panel and door and with a sharp flick of your wrist, you pop the door with the plastic door panel fasteners out of the door. These panel pins can be purchased at Pep Boys if they break when you do this. The tool works better at not breaking them and the door panel.
Here is a final warning if you still want to do it yourself, the window is HEAVY and once the motor is out, nothing, I REPEAT, nothing is left holding the window up, it will fall rapidly to the bottom of the door channel, it will smash and cut you really badly if your fingers are there for whatever reason, you will regret what you are doing immediately as you enter into shock, and yes it will hurt that bad!
You have what you need to get started, you have been warned of the dangers, now it’s up to you . . . GOOD LUCK!
